Spore to NOT use 10 DAY DRM!

Despite some hand-wringing by fans, EA today announced that their hugely anticipated Will Wright game Spore will not make use of SecuROM’s 10-day periodic re-authetication and instead use a modified version to require online authentication.

The announcement comes on the heels of news that Mass Effect will also be ditching the ten day re-authentication.

If you’ve studied music, film and game piracy for any length of time, it’s pretty clear that piracy will never be eliminated. The fight against piracy is always a game of percentages, and one market that’s losing that fight is PC Gaming. Despite no shortage of annoying copy-protection systems like Starforce, PC game sales continue to plunge, and developers are shifting their attention to the console industry, where the need for hardware mod-chips and online verification systems make piracy slightly harder.

Hey Everyone,

If your still coming to the website and still subscribing to the feed, here is some news and updates about Control F12.

1.) Control F12 is not gone or finished.

We have not disapeared and we are still around. The reason for the lack of recordings and actions is basically…”Life Happens” and the podcast has taken a back seat and was left at truck stop. I just bought a house and Mr. Kyle has been super busy with work….so not to stress or worry…

2.) The Studio

When moving into the new house, I now have some extra added space to setup the audio equipment…..but hence, I have been lazy with this….NO MORE!

So, now your probably asking….WHEN? All I can say is soon…

Is HD DVD Trying to Lose?
As many of you know I have been somewhat of a critic of the high definition DVD format war. I have never understood how apparent shortsightedness and desire for short-term corporate licensing profits could have prevented so many companies from embracing a unified format. Instead, most companies are bent (I could end the sentence here) on duking it out and forcing customers to flip the bill and go through the decision-making process.

But HD DVD of late seems to WANT to fail. Or at least the software companies backing that format (Warner Home Video in particular) want it to fail.

I mean, what other reason would there be for the hybrid HD DVD/DVD format?

Here is an advertisement in a local Circuit City flyer I received this week:

So, we see from this flyer that “HD DVD discs cost more than Blu-ray”. THIS is what the consumer sees when they go to the store. This is what the consumer sees when they look at the flyer. The consumer doesn’t realize that this is a hybrid DVD and HD DVD format disc.

And the consumer doesn’t care.

Because NO consumers are going to WANT hybrid HD DVD/DVD discs.

Why won’t consumers want these hybrid discs? Because no one likes to spend 3x the cost of a regular DVD just to have a disc available in the eventuality they decide to buy a high definition DVD player whose format may or may not exceed niche status let alone “win” the current format war.

People with HD DVD players already are simply being forced to pay for the additional cost of manufacturing and mastering that goes into including the DVD side. They get no real benefit and in fact would do better if they could just buy a straight HD DVD disc.

In case this isn’t apparent enough to our readers, please read my lips: Warner Home Video, whether on purpose or by sheer bad taste, is sticking it to HD DVD. There is no option for consumers to purchase HD DVD only versions of this (or other current) movies from Warner Home Video. So what’s going to happen? People are going to think twice - that’s what. And people are going to start wondering why HD DVD movies (in some cases) cost more than their Blu-ray counterparts.

Motorola KRZR Security Alert

Do you have a Motorola KRZR? Then you might want to be more careful with your passwords….

This phone by accidental design stores passwords that you enter into your phone, even though it displays (********) as you type them in. Here is an example below of the information that was passed along to Motorola and their lack of response to this major security problem

Here’s the message sent to Moto:

Hello,

I purchased a Moto KRZR a few weeks ago. In that time I discovered a rather serious security issue. Passwords typed into a password field are being saved in the user dictionary.

For example, I visited the WAP interface of a work site. It requires me to login. The password field shows asterisks when I type in the password. Later when I go to send a text message, I started typing a word which contained the first couple letters of my password - it auto-complted my password.

The password was alpha-numeric and unique. It doesn’t even contain any dictionary words.

I have since returned the phone largely due to this issue.
